Reimagine how you make sense of your impact

When evaluating complex, relational work, a "coherence gap" often emerges: organizations understand the importance of relational work in systems change work, but rely on linear tools and approaches for their evaluation.

Our open-source methodology for Credible Claims in Complexity closes this gap. It provides a structured 4-layer approach to harmonize your entire measurement strategy, ensuring every step—from your underlying principles to your final report—is methodologically coherent.

The methodology guides you through:

  • Layer 1 - Paradigm & Principles: Living into a regenerative paradigm, grounded in a commitment to equity and a strong justice orientation.
  • Layer 2 - Frameworks & Evaluation Design: Building living systems maps (such as the Impact Garden) to track the context, resources, and relationships that actually sustain change alongside your standard indicators.
  • Layer 3 - Methods & Analytical Approaches: Meaningfully integrating quantitative and qualitative data to capture essential relational dynamics (using tools like the Capacity Compass).
  • Layer 4 - Credible Claims and Narratives: Weaving these diverse data points into a cohesive whole that serves two distinct purposes: generating defensible "Credible Claims" for external funders, and providing evidence-backed, strategic advice for internal leadership.

Who is it for?

  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) professionals seeking to cultivate regenerative evaluation practices and expand their methodological toolkit.
  • Executive Leaders and Strategy Leads who need robust, systemic data to make informed, adaptive decisions.
  • Foundations, Funds, and Multilaterals moving towards trust-based philanthropy and portfolio-level learning.
  • Purpose-driven organizations wanting to honor the relational reality of their work while maintaining rigorous accountability.

What’s included?

Access to the comprehensive methodology brief, which details the theoretical grounding of each layer, practical guidance on how to navigate the synthesis process, and strategic prompts to help your team translate complex findings into both internal advice and external narratives.

We had the privilege of working with Jannik to implement Unity Effect's Capacity Compass and Impact Garden in the Bopa DiPeo fellowship. He helped us identify relevant items and clarify what capacities and capabilities we wanted to focus on and measure. As a model, the Capacity Compass provided enough structure and rigour while also adapting to fit our context and the diversity of each fellow's experience. We look forward to continued work with Unity Effect in the coming years!
